Rapid Tooling vs Production Tooling: When to Use Each

Rapid tooling uses softer tooling (often aluminum or soft steel) to get parts in your hands in as little as 10–15 days. It is ideal for design validation, trade-show samples, and bridge production up to a few thousand parts.

Production tooling is hardened steel, multi-cavity, and built for millions of cycles with tight process windows. Lead time is typically 3–5 weeks, but per-part cost drops dramatically at volume.

A common path: rapid tool for EVT/DVT, then move to production tooling for mass manufacturing once the design is frozen.
